what is hair porosity?

Hair porosity is the ability for your hair to not only accept moisture into the hair but to also retain it. Each strand of hair is made up of 3 layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Healthy hair requires the cuticles to be well spaced in order for hydration (such as waters, oils and moisturisers) to be able to soak into the deeper layers.

the different levels of hair porosity

1. low porosity

low porosity in the hair means your hair’s cuticle is closed, making it more water-resistant. This makes it harder for moisture to be absorbed into your strands, resulting in frequent dryness.

2. medium porosity

Medium porosity hair sits in the middle as the cuticle is left slightly open and results in combination hair, that could easily become dry and damaged. Equally, with a bit of care and the right products, your hair will thank you.

3. high porosity

The cuticle is most open in high porosity hair. Although highly porous hair easily absorbs moisture, that also makes it much harder for the hair to retain moisture. The lack of retention often leads to damage and breakage in your strands. The main culprits for this hair type are bleached or colour-damaged hair.

how to test hair porosity?

If you’re still feeling confused, don’t worry! To discover what type of hair porosity you have, we recommend doing the water glass test. Fill up a cup of water, then take a strand of hair and place it in the glass.

Low porosity strands float at the top, medium porosity strands suspend in the water, and high porosity to sink straight to the bottom.

With this quick and easy test, you will be able to learn more about your hair and treat it with the care it deserves.
