Greasy hair? We’ve been there and, trust us, we know it’s not fun. From super-hot showers to a little too much love for your conditioner, there are a lot of reasons why you might be dealing with greasy hair. We’ve broken down what causes greasy hair, why hair gets greasy so fast, and our top tips on how to get rid of greasy hair to help you keep your style fresh.
what causes greasy hair?
Our scalps are covered in sebaceous glands that produce oil, aka sebum. The oil itself isn’t a bad thing – it’s what hydrates and nourishes strands for healthy, strong hair. However, a buildup of this sebum can cause the greasy hair look — not cute.
why does my hair get greasy so fast?
hair texture
OK, so turns out your greasy hair might not be your fault; hair texture has a lot to do with it.
Fine hair, for example, tends to look greasy quicker than thick and coarse hair types. Why? Because fine-hair has more individual strands per square centimetre (stay with me), and each strand has a sebaceous gland attached to it, meaning the scalp has more glands and therefore produces more oil.
over-washing
We all love that washday feel, but washing your hair too often can contribute to greasy hair. Shampoo works to rid your strands of oil for a fresh look, but cleansing the hair more frequently than needed strips the hair of essential moisture. The scalp then goes into overdrive, producing oil to compensate for moisture loss, leading to (you guessed it) greasy hair.
super-hot showers
We love a hot shower as much as the next person does, but using super-hot water to wash your hair is a key cause of greasy hair. Hot water can dry out the scalp causing it to over produce oil to replenish lost moisture. Again, oil build-up = greasy hair.
too much conditioner
Step away from the conditioner. We love to keep our hair hydrated, but conditioners can sometimes be more foe than friend. To moisturise the hair properly, apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends only. Using conditioner on the roots can lead to oil build up — and we’re not about the greasy look.

cooler water
Using cooler water to wash the hair helps to keep the scalp hydrated and avoid overproduction of oil. Cooler showers also help to lock in moisture and shine for your glossiest hair yet–win-win!
wash less often
We love when our hair feels super clean, but washing every day isn’t always the best idea. Quick reminder: cleansing the hair removes oils and can lead to moisture loss if not followed with a hydrating conditioner or mask.
Leaving it a little longer between washes allows the scalp to regulate oil production and hydrate and nourish strands. The hair then adjusts to your new routine and doesn’t look greasy so quickly anymore.
