jack of all curls: how to curl your hair

how to curl your hair

Is there a better feeling than stepping out into the world with fresh, bouncy curls? Going to the salon every time you want gorgeous curls can get pricey – and when you try to recreate them at home, it doesn’t always go to plan. That’s why we’ve created the ultimate guide on how to get the ultimate curls at home

From curly blow dries to beachy waves, we’ve got the low down on how to achieve ideal curly strands.

how to curl hair with a straightener

Quick and convenient, learning how to curl hair with a straightener is a must for those times you’re in a bind and need curls fast. The technique used for curling hair with straighteners is pretty similar to curling with tongs – minus the faff.

  1. After sectioning your hair, apply blockade heat defense serum evenly throughout the hair, focusing on the ends.
  2. Grab a one-inch section and slip the hair between the clamps.
  3. Glide the straightener down while rotating 360 degrees to create your curl. Similar to an iron, the tension of the hair wrapped around the straightener produces a bouncy, shiny curl with staying power.
  4. Finish with our fluxus touchable hairspray for a stay-all-day style that won’t make your hair crunchy.

how to use a curling wand

Knowing how to use a curling wand might seem simple, but it’s all in the technique. Curling wands give you greater control, allowing you to choose how tight or loose you want your curls to be.

  1. Begin with completely dry hair. Make sure to brush through so your hair is tangle-free and ready for curling.
  2. Always apply heat protectant before styling your hair. Our detangling primer is perfect to prep and prime hair before using your curling wand.
  3. Choose the right wand for the look you want. A smaller barrel will give a tighter, more spiral-like curl whereas a bigger barrel will give you voluminous, Hollywood waves.
  4. Make sure you protect your hands and use a heat-resistant glove every time you use a curling wand– burning your fingertips is NOT the vibe.
  5. Holding your curling wand pointing down, take a section of hair, lay it flat on the curling wand, and wrap it all the way down, making sure the section is flat and smooth. Hold for 5-15 seconds and release. Wait until your hair is cool, then shake or brush out the curls until you reach your desired look. For extra-voluminous, natural-looking curls, switch the direction of curl every other section (alternating between curling away from and towards your face).
  6. Finish with the ultimate hairspray to keep your hair curled all day long, fluxus touchable hairspray.

how to use curling tongs

how to curl your hair

Thanks to their circular barrels and curved clamps, curling tongs are the ideal styling tool for bouncy, shaped curls. The concave design adds volume from root to tip and can be used to create a variety of styles, from retro pin curls to the perfect swooped back curtain bangs.

  1. After roughly sectioning your hair, apply your fave heat protectant (we love the blockade heat defense serum) evenly throughout the hair, paying extra attention to the tips. Grab a one-inch section, open the clamp, then slip the hair between the barrel and clamp.
  2. Glide the iron down while rotating 360 degrees to create your curl. When you reach the bottom of the strand, roll the barrel up and hold the curl for a couple of seconds before releasing.
  3. Finish with a spritz of long-wearing hairspray that holds your curls while keeping them touchable all day long. We’re constantly reaching for fluxus touchable hairspray!

how to do a curly blow dry

Recreate a salon-worthy curly blow-dry at home! Unlike curling with styling tools, learning how to curl hair with a blow dryer might take a little more practice, so make sure you do a couple of test runs before whipping out the hairdryer for your next big night out.

  1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair that’s around 70% dry.
  2. Apply1-3 pumps of our blockade heat defense serum and distribute throughout the hair.
  3. Use a round, metal barrel brush – the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl.
  4. Using a blow dryer with a nozzle attachment, wrap one-inch sections around a barrel brush and rotate while applying heat to create the curl. Then, roll the barrel brush up like a hair roller.
  5. In hair salons they have an arsenal of round brushes, meaning by the end of the process you often have a head full of brushes. When trying to recreate a curly blow-dry at home, we get that this isn’t always doable. We recommend blasting the cold setting on your wrapped and rolled section to set the shape of the curl before you unravel a perfect silky curl and move on to your next section.
  6. Don’t forget to finish with a spritz of fluxus touchable hairspray so your curly blowdry lasts all day.
